Prayer Times

Frequently Asked Questions about Prayer Times

How are prayer times calculated?

Prayer times (Salat) are calculated based on the position of the sun in the sky and the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) of your city. Our tool uses high-precision astronomical algorithms to provide accurate times for Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha. The calculation heavily depends on the twilight angle, which determines when true dawn (Fajr) begins and when dusk (Isha) ends. These angles vary based on latitude and the specific Islamic convention used. For example, during summer in high-latitude regions, the sun may not go far enough below the horizon to produce true night, requiring alternative calculation methods such as the one-seventh of the night rule or angle-based interpolation. Our platform automatically accounts for these variations to ensure you have the most accurate and reliable times regardless of your global location.

Why do prayer times differ between calculation methods?

Different Islamic organizations use slightly different twilight angles to determine Fajr and Isha. The Muslim World League (MWL) is widely used in Europe and the Far East, typically using 18 degrees for both Fajr and Isha. The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) uses 15 degrees, which is common in the USA and Canada. The Umm al-Qura University in Makkah uses 18.5 degrees for Fajr and a fixed 90-minute interval after Maghrib for Isha (120 minutes in Ramadan), making it standard for the Arabian Peninsula. Other conventions include the Egyptian General Authority of Survey and the University of Islamic Sciences in Karachi. You can adjust these methods in our App Settings to match your local masjid's schedule. It is highly recommended to consult your local mosque to align your personal application settings with the communal prayer schedule in your community.

Common Questions about Qibla Direction

How does the Qibla finder work?

Our Qibla finder uses your device's geolocation (GPS data) and built-in compass sensor (magnetometer) to calculate the shortest path (Great Circle) between your current location and the Kaaba in Makkah (Latitude 21.4225° N, Longitude 39.8262° E). This calculation is based on spherical trigonometry, ensuring the highest level of mathematical precision for your daily prayers. The Great Circle method represents the shortest distance across the surface of the earth, which is the universally accepted standard by Islamic scholars for determining the direction of prayer across long distances. For the most accurate result, ensure you are away from large metal objects, power lines, or electronic devices that might interfere with your device's magnetic sensor. Holding your phone flat (parallel to the ground) also improves sensor accuracy. We prioritize your privacy, meaning your GPS data is processed locally on your device and never stored on our servers for this tool.

Why is my Qibla direction not accurate?

Inaccuracy is almost always caused by uncalibrated device sensors or magnetic interference in your immediate environment. Smartphones rely on a magnetometer to detect the Earth's magnetic field, which can be easily disrupted by phone cases with magnets, laptops, or even the rebar inside concrete buildings. Try moving your phone in a 'figure-8' pattern to recalibrate the compass. This forces the device's operating system to reset its baseline magnetic readings. Additionally, ensure your location permissions are granted, as an incorrect starting location will result in an incorrect Qibla angle. If your device lacks a compass sensor entirely, the tool will provide the specific degree angle relative to True North (e.g., 136° South-East). You can then use the position of the sun, shadows, or a traditional manual compass aligned with True North to find the precise direction of the Kaaba from your home or workplace.

Navigating the Islamic Hijri Calendar

What is the difference between Hijri and Gregorian calendars?

The Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. This makes it roughly 11 days shorter than the solar Gregorian calendar, causing Islamic holidays to move through the seasons over a 33-year cycle.

Why do Hijri dates sometimes differ between countries?

Differences arise because some regions rely on local physical moonsighting to start a month, while others use pre-calculated astronomical calendars (like the Umm al-Qura calendar). Our converter provides a standard conversion that you can adjust if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Zakat

What is Zakat and what are the basic Fiqh principles?

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam, representing a mandatory charitable contribution for all qualifying adult Muslims who possess wealth above a specific threshold. It serves as a spiritual purification of wealth and a fundamental means of social justice, helping to redistribute excess wealth to those in need (the eight eligible categories mentioned in the Quran, such as the poor and the needy). Basic Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) principles govern that Zakat is typically 2.5% (or 1/40th) of savings and financial assets that are not used for essential living expenses. The primary condition is that the wealth must reach a minimum threshold, known as Nisab, and that one complete lunar year (Hawl) has passed since the wealth first reached this threshold. If your wealth remains above the Nisab limit throughout the lunar year, Zakat becomes obligatory on the total accumulated wealth at the end of that year, not just on the amount that exceeded the threshold.

How are Nisab thresholds calculated (Gold/Silver standards)?

Nisab is the minimum threshold of wealth that a Muslim must possess for a full lunar year before Zakat becomes obligatory. Historically, during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the Nisab was set at 20 Mithqal of gold (equivalent to 87.48 grams) or 200 Dirhams of silver (equivalent to 612.36 grams). Because the relative value of gold and silver has diverged significantly in modern times, the silver Nisab is much lower in fiat currency than the gold Nisab. Most contemporary scholars strongly recommend using the silver threshold to calculate your Nisab. By using the lower silver standard, more individuals qualify to pay Zakat, which maximizes the charitable benefit distributed to the poor and needy in society. Our calculator automatically fetches live market rates for both metals to give you an accurate, real-time calculation.

Which asset categories are included or excluded from Zakat?

Zakat is payable on assets that have the potential to grow. This includes cash on hand and in bank accounts, gold and silver jewelry (according to most scholars, especially if kept as an investment), business inventory (goods intended for sale), shares, stocks, cryptocurrency, and agricultural produce. Rental properties are not subject to Zakat on their capital value, but the rental income saved after a year is subject to Zakat. Conversely, personal items used for daily living are strictly excluded from Zakat. This means your primary residence, personal vehicles, clothing, furniture, and tools used for your trade are entirely exempt, regardless of their value. When using our calculator, you should also subtract your immediate debts and liabilities (such as this month's rent, utility bills, or short-term loan repayments) from your total gross assets to determine your net Zakatable wealth.

Frequently Asked Questions about Islamic Inheritance (Mirath)

What are the primary heir categories and Quranic fixed shares (Fara'id)?

The laws of inheritance in Islam (Ilm al-Fara'id) are primarily derived from the Holy Quran, specifically in Surah An-Nisa (verses 11, 12, and 176). These verses outline the fixed fractional shares (Zawi al-Furud) for primary heirs. The primary heirs who are never entirely excluded from inheritance are the spouse (husband or wife), the parents (mother and father), and the children (sons and daughters). For example, a husband inherits 1/2 of his deceased wife's estate if she leaves no children, or 1/4 if she does. A wife inherits 1/4 of her husband's estate if he leaves no children, or 1/8 if he does. Daughters inherit 1/2 if she is an only child, or 2/3 shared equally if there are multiple daughters and no sons. If there is a son, the male receives a portion equal to that of two females. After the fixed fractional shares are distributed, the remaining residue (Asabah) goes to the closest male relatives. Our calculator systematically applies these complex rules to provide accurate, Sharia-compliant share breakdowns.

What is the Wasiyyah (Islamic Will) and why is a legal disclaimer important?

Before any inheritance is distributed to the legal heirs, the estate must first be used to pay off funeral expenses, settle all outstanding financial debts, and fulfill the deceased's Wasiyyah (Will). A Muslim is permitted to bequeath a maximum of one-third (1/3) of their total estate to non-heirs (such as distant relatives, adopted children, or charitable organizations) through a Wasiyyah. The remaining two-thirds (or more, if the will is less than a third) must be distributed strictly according to the fixed Quranic shares.

Important Disclaimer: This inheritance calculator is provided for educational and informational purposes only. Islamic inheritance laws involve highly intricate nuances, blocking rules (Hajb), and variations across different Madhahib (schools of Islamic jurisprudence). Furthermore, local civil laws regarding estate distribution may conflict with Islamic guidelines, requiring specialized estate planning. Therefore, this tool should not substitute for professional consultation. We strongly urge you to consult with a qualified Islamic scholar (Mufti) and a certified legal professional in your jurisdiction before finalizing any estate distribution or drafting a legally binding Islamic Will.

Understanding the Ramadan Countdown

How is the start date of Ramadan determined?

Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon (Hilal). While astronomical calculations can predict the new moon's birth, traditional practice often relies on visual sighting. Our countdown uses a projected date based on standard Hijri calendars, which may vary by a day depending on your local moonsighting committee.

What is the significance of Suhoor and Iftar timings?

Suhoor is the meal consumed before Fajr (dawn) begins, and Iftar is the meal to break the fast at Maghrib (sunset). Accuracy is crucial to ensure the fast is valid. Our tool provides precise localized timings for both to help you manage your fast with confidence.
